Solstice Sun Salutations by Temple Yoga and the Herbarium

Solstice Sun Salutations by Temple Yoga and the Herbarium

Friday 21st June 2019 6pm:
We will join together to move through 108 sun salutations in honour of The Summer Solstice. Working through 9 sets of 12 sun salutations we will rest, rehydrate, refuel, reflect and nurture ourselves between sets. There will be opportunity to set intentions for each set also. Afterwards we will join together to share tasty, home cooked plant based food to nourish ourselves after our practice and watch the sun setting in the beautiful lakeside setting of Wyresdale Park.

The summer solstice is a celebration of abundance and blessings, by honouring the solstice we are reminded how precious each day and each season is, as the truth of it passing away is also acknowledged.
The summer solstice is the highest point of energy, we are bathed in the full power of the sun and are guided to illuminate areas of our life that have been hidden.

According to the Vedas, the sun "Surya" is not only the creator of all life but also the manifestation of the soul. Since everything that exists originates from the sun then it must contain the potential of all that is known.

SURYA = sun and NAMASKAR = to bow

In practicing sun salutations or Surya Namaskar we are bowing to the sun- giving thanks for it's life force energy, connecting that to our internal life force energy and making compassionate connections with ourselves, others and the world around us.

There are many explanations as to the significance of 108:
- In the Sanskrit alphabet there are 54 letters, each with a masculine and femine = 108
- In Ayurveda there are believed to be 108 sacred energy centres
- The diameter of the sun is 108 times the diameter of Earth
- In numerology 108 =9 which symbolises universal love, eternity and awakening
- In ancient Vedic culture 108 = the number of the wholeness of existence - 1= one thing, 0=nothing and 8 = everything

The practice of completing 108 Sun Salutations is an act of reverence, honour and commitment.

This event MUST be PRE BOOKED. There will be a car share in place if anybody needs transport to the venue - Wyresdale Park, Scorton. The event will last between 3-4 hours in total including food and drinks afterwards. No yoga experience needed but a base level of fitness - as always listen to your body and rest when needed but this will be a physical practice.
